Art Explorer Travel

Take a break from winter in Baltimore and join the Contemporary Museum in warm and beautiful San Diego to explore the vibrant art scene in California's second largest city!

February 25-28, 2010

Did you know that San Diego possesses one of the most adventurous contemporary outdoor sculptures collection in the United States? The Stuart Collection at the University of California, San Diego features ambitious site-installation projects by renowned artists such as Robert Irwin, Jenny Holzer, Michael Asher, Bruce Nauman, Alexis Smith and many others. Trip highlights include a VIP tour (by foot or golf cart) of the Stuart Collection led by Director Mary Beebe.

We will also enjoy tours of premier art collections in private homes, including the stunning home and gardens of international contemporary art collectors Iris and Matthew Strauss. According to Art News, Iris and Matthew possess one of the Top 200 art collections in the world! We will also have a VIP tour and private cocktail reception with Director Hugh Davies at the Museum of Contemporary Art, which will be hosting a special exhibition and sculptural installation by the cutting–edge artist and 2008 winner of a MacArthur "genius" fellowship Tara Donovan.

Our group will also visit the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Museum of Art which has an impressive collection that includes Old Master paintings and Modern Mexican Art, and studios of leading artists living in San Diego.

The trip will include an add-on option to see first-hand the dynamic art world in Tijuana, Mexico. With an experienced local guide, we will spend one day exploring the contemporary art scene in Tijuana Mexico, including tours to artists' studios and to the Consejo Nacional Para La Cultura Y Las Artes. Tijuana has a very active artist community whose internationally recognized work has, according to Newsweek, earned Tijuana the title of "one of the most important new cultural meccas."

During our visit to San Diego we will stay in the luxurious ocean-front La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. Overlooking the Pacific, La Valencia is an elegant boutique hotel just steps from miles of stunning coastline, museums, shopping and galleries. The Mediterranean inspired architecture and décor includes beautiful courtyards, hand painted murals, and Spanish mosaics.
