Aboard the Cyber-Clipper: A Transatlantic Technological Adventure
October 12, 1996 - January 10, 1997

Internet / Context Exhibition: Columbus Center

In a cross-cultural exchange, two artists, Lee Boot and Frank Fietzek, working with computer specialists, oceanographers, and scientists, created Internet art works on a webpage. The exhibition combined the romance of the great 19th-century sailing ships with 20th-century communications technology to link the ports and people of Baltimore and Hamburg, Germany. Presented in collaboration with the Goethe Institut, Washington, DC, the city of Hamburg, the Kunsthaus art organization, the ship Pride of Baltimore, II, Maryland Public Television, and the Internet, the project provided a free public access site to the World Wide Web at The Columbus Center in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. An artist residency program was initiated to facilitate project development (1 week in duration).
