Ignisfatuus: An Installation
By Paul Etienne Lincoln March 30, 1996 - June 02, 1996
The Conservatory / Druid Hill Park, Baltimore
The elaborate kinetic machines and
installations of Paul Etienne Lincoln were presented at
the Conservatory of Druid
Hill Park (c. 1887), an operating Victorian-style greenhouse
situated in one of the largest planned urban parks in the
country. The project was conceived as a meditation on the
connections between man and nature, animal and plant life,
as symbolized by the constant flow of water within them and
set to the musical backdrop of recordings by Baltimore diva
Rosa Ponselle. Lincoln's frequent use of "live" materials-
insects and organic matter- and the rapid dematerialization
of his objects make exhibition in traditional museums extremely
difficult. The Conservatory, on the other hand, served as
an ideal studio/exhibition space for Lincoln's work. The
setting also allowed audiences a unique opportunity to participate
in the artistic process. An artist residency program facilitated
project development (1 month in duration).
Artists included
in the exhibition are: Paul Etienne
