In conjunction with the 1999 Baltimore Waterfront Festival, the Contemporary Museum organized an exhibition of new works by Mid-Atlantic artists using sailcloth as their primary material. Demonstrating the diverse artistic objective that can be achieved using the same material, the seven artists in the exhibition took advantage of both the unique properties of the sailcloth—its ability to capture the effects of wind and light—and the unique feature of the waterfront site. With all works responding to their environment, the warm, sunny, and breezy weather for the four-day event offered excellent conditions for experiencing the effects of sight and sound that the artists sought to demonstrate.
