Making Sense: Ellen Gallagher, Christian Marclay, Liliana
Porter May 4, 2000 - August 20, 2000
Making Sense invites audiences to re-examine not
only how they understand art, but also how their experiences
shape
the meaning of the world around them. Continuing the Contemporary
Museum's tradition of presenting installations which respond
to specific locations, it is on view in both the gallery
setting of the Museum and the non-traditional exhibition
space of the Rymland Room at the Peabody Conservatory of
Music. The three artists included in Making Sense use recognizable,
even familiar images and objects. Ellen Gallagher includes
racially-charged or racist symbols from popular culture;
Christian Marclay deploys all kinds of music paraphernalia
in making his work; and Liliana focuses on using children's
toys to explore deeper meaning in everyday objects.
