Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture
July 1 - September 24, 2005
Beautiful Losers explores recent multimedia work by a diverse group of U.S.-based artists who participate in or are inspired by aspects of street life
loosely organized around skateboarding, graffiti, punk and
hip-hop subcultures. Though no single characteristic unifies
the practices of these artists, they share a do-it-yourself
attitude, a love of popular culture, a facility with the
visual vocabularies of graphic design and advertising, and
a fresh perspective on urban renewal.
Artists represented
in the exhibition include: Neil Blender, Thomas Campbell,
Henry Chalfant, Larry
Clark, Cynthia Connolly, R. Crumb, Brian Donnelly (KAWS),
Cheryl Dunn, Shepard Fairey, Glen E. Friedman, Phil
Frost, Futura, Mark Gonzales, Keith Haring, Evan Hecox, Wes
Humpston, Jo Jackson, Todd James (REAS), James Jarvis,
Andy Jenkins, Chris Johanson, Spike Jonze, Margaret
Kilgallen,
