Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture
July 1 - September 24, 2005

Beautiful Losers explores recent multimedia work by a diverse group of U.S.-based artists who participate in or are inspired by aspects of street life loosely organized around skateboarding, graffiti, punk and hip-hop subcultures. Though no single characteristic unifies the practices of these artists, they share a do-it-yourself attitude, a love of popular culture, a facility with the visual vocabularies of graphic design and advertising, and a fresh perspective on urban renewal.

Artists represented in the exhibition include: Neil Blender, Thomas Campbell, Henry Chalfant, Larry Clark, Cynthia Connolly, R. Crumb, Brian Donnelly (KAWS), Cheryl Dunn, Shepard Fairey, Glen E. Friedman, Phil Frost, Futura, Mark Gonzales, Keith Haring, Evan Hecox, Wes Humpston, Jo Jackson, Todd James (REAS), James Jarvis, Andy Jenkins, Chris Johanson, Spike Jonze, Margaret Kilgallen, Harmony Korine, Ari Marcopoulos, Geoff McFetridge, Barry McGee, Ryan McGinley, Ryan McGinness, Mike Mills, Raymond Pettibon, Stephen Powers (ESPO), Pushead, Terry Richardson, Clare E. Rojas, Rostarr, Craig R. Stecyk III, Ed Templeton, Tobin Yelland and Andy Warhol.
Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture has been organized by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, and the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, and guest curated by Aaron Rose and Christian Strike with Thom Collins, René de Guzman and Matthew Distel.

The presentation of this exhibition in Baltimore has been made possible by the generous support of Nike and Scion.
